प्रशासन की ओर से शुक्रवार की रात को ही समूचे क्षेत्र में अलर्ट जारी कर दिया गया था। गंगा की सहायक नदियों में उफान आने के कारण गंगा के जलस्तर में शुक्रवार की शाम से ही वृद्धि दर्ज की गई थी। मध्य रात्रि 12 बजे गंगा का जलस्तर चेतावनी रेखा को पार कर गया था।
रात भर गंगा के जलस्तर में उतार-चढ़ाव होता रहा। पर्वतीय क्षेत्र में बारिश लगातार जारी है, जिससे रुद्रप्रयाग और देवप्रयाग क्षेत्र में भी नदियां उफान पर हैं। केंद्रीय जल आयोग की ओर से प्रशासन को भेजी गई रिपोर्ट में बताया गया है कि गंगा का जलस्तर ऋषिकेश में सुबह सात बजे खतरे के निशान 340.50 मीटर से मात्र 10 सेंटीमीटर नीचे पहुंच गया है। जल स्तर में निरंतर वृद्धि जारी है। त्रिवेणी घाट का प्लेटफार्म पानी में डूब गया है।
